Job Description: |
Main Purpose of the Role:
Overall administrative and technical in-charge of the anaesthesia department and Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Along with his/her colleagues and other staff (anaesthesia and ICU staff/assistants), ensures optimum level of patient care during the peri-operative period in the OT, Recovery Room or Post Anaesthesia Care Unit (PACU) and ICU, to achieve the desired outcome as per facility’s stated policies.
Duties / Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities outline below serve only as guidelines. These may be adopted by the individual health facility after making necessary modifications that suits its circumstances best:
- Manages, supervises and facilitates smooth functioning of anaesthesia services, during elective as well as emergency operative procedures, delivered by him/her and by colleagues and other staff 24/7.
- Ensures that all the admitted patients on the operative list are examined preoperatively, a day before they are scheduled for surgery and assessment of anaesthesia fitness and written instructions with regards to specific pre-operative instructions are provided to duty staff.
- Finalizes the OT list after certification of the fitness of patients needing general or spinal anaesthesia.
- Administers anaesthesia with the best of skills and care, observing the SOPs and SMPs to ensure safe induction and smooth recovery.
- Communicates necessary information to the operating surgeon regarding the general condition of the patients before, during and after the operation / procedure.
- Ensures that patients remain pain free and under full relaxation per operatively as well as during the immediate post-operative period.
- Ensure that sufficient stock of life saving drugs and anaesthesia gases are available at all times.
Teaching
- Teaches and trains Medical, Nursing and Paramedical Staff as per Departmental/Specialty requirements/Protocols and work instructions.
Supervisory
- Supervises the functioning of Medics, Staff Nurses and paramedical staff of anaesthesia department and ICU.
Representation
- Presents the management issues in the meetings of OTMC or to the Medical Superintendent/ Clinical Superintendent (MS/CS) if any matter needs urgent attention.
Reports and Returns
- submits departmental Statistics to MIS through MS/CS
Medico-Legal
- Follows SOPs on the subject whenever such need arises
Quality Control / Conformance to standards
- Complies service deliverance as provided in Minimum Service Delivery Standards
- (MSDS), SOPs specially on HCWM & IP.
Performance Evaluation
- Writes Objective Performance Evaluation Reports of subordinate staff, based on achievements against set targets.
Good communication Skills.
- Computer literate with capability to work on common/routine components of Microsoft Office Package.
Attitudes & Personal Qualities
- Pleasant, caring and highly conscientious person who handles patients gently under the state of unconsciousness.
